Lyrical Interpretation

The Weekend

By SZA

                                                                                             [Verse 1]

You say you got a girl

                                                                                             How you want me?

How you want me when you got a girl?

Text Box: The song appeals to the conventions of a typical R&B song, as the artist stuck to the theme of love & heartbreak.                                                                                       The feelin' is wreckless
Of knowin' it's selfish
Knowin' I'm desperate

                                                                                             Gettin' all in your love

Text Box: The Protagonist’s behaviour- The artist starts of being confused and quite judgmental to the fact that the guy wanted a relationship with her, even though he was with another. However, later on we see that she’s fallen under his spell and she’s paranoid whether he’s with the other girl, when he should be with the artist at that precise time. Fallin' all over love, like

Do it 'til it hurts less
Hanging out the back, all up in your lap

Like is you comin' home?

Text Box: Protagonist’s Behaviour- After this she says ‘drop them draws’ to imply that now it is only a sexual relationship. Is you out with her?
I don't care long as you're here by

            10:30, no later than

Drop them drawers, give me what I want

                                                                                             [Chorus]

My man is my man is your man

                                                                                             Heard it's her man too

My man is my man is your man

Text Box: Protagonist’s Behaviour- It’s like she’s actually talking the love interest’s girlfriend.                                                                                Heard that's her man

Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

I just keep him satisfied through the weekend

            You're like 9 to 5, I'm the weekend

Make him lose his mind every weekend

                                                                                           You take Wednesday, Thursday

Then just send him my way

Think I got it covered for the weekend

                                                                                   [Verse 2]

I gotta say I'm in the mood for a little bit more of that

I mean I'm saying what kind of deal is two days?

Text Box: The Protagonist’s Behaviour- She’s jealous of the love interest’s girlfriend and has decided she wants more days with him and wants to replace the girlfriend.I need me at least 'bout four of them
More of them, more of you on me

On us, just tell me you want me, yeah
Monday and I'll be at your door
Ready to take her place

                                                                                    Ready to give you

What you've been missin' on weekdays

                                                                                   What you've been waitin' for

                                                                                   10:30, no later than

Drop them drawers, I know what you want

                                                                                   [Chorus]

My man is my man is your man

                                                                                   Heard it's her man too

My man is my man is your man  Text Box: Protagonist’s Behaviour- She’s come to acceptance with the idea that the love interest wants the other girl and that the protagonist is just ‘the other woman’ and forever will be.

Heard that's her man

Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

I just keep him satisfied through the weekend

You're like 9 to 5, I'm the weekend

Make him lose his mind every weekend

                                                                                   You take Wednesday, Thursday

Then just send him my way
Think I got it covered for the weekend
